My political ideal is that of democracy. Let every man be respected as an individual and no man idolized. It is an irony of fate that I myself have been the recipient of excessive admiration and respect from my fellows through no fault, and no merit, of my own. The cause of this may well be the desire, unattainable for many, to understand the one or two ideas to which I have with my feeble powers attained through ceaseless struggle. I am quite aware that it is necessary for the success of any complex undertaking that one man should do the thinking and directing and in general bear the responsibility. But the led must not be compelled, they must be able to choose their leader. An autocratic system of coercion, in my opinion, soon degenerates. For force always attracts men of low morality, and I believe it to be an invariable rule that tyrants of genius are succeeded by scoundrels. For this reason I have always been passionately opposed to systems such as we see in Italy and Russia today. The thing that has brought discredit upon the prevailing form of democracy in Europe today is not to be laid to the door of the democratic idea as such, but to lack of stability on the part of the heads of governments and to the impersonal character of the electoral system. I believe that in this respect the United States of America have found the right way. They have a responsible President who is elected for a sufficiently long period and has sufficient powers to be really responsible.
On the other hand, what I value in our political system (el alemán) is the more extensive provision that it makes for the individual in case of illness or need. The really valuable thing in the pageant of human life seems to me not the State but the creative, sentient individual, the personality; it alone creates the noble and the sublime, while the herd as such remains dull in thought and dull in feeling.
Ayer estaba programada una "megamarcha" aquí en chilangotitlán (México DF). Los organizadores amenazaron: Medio millón de personas iremos a protestar por la privatización de la industria eléctrica. Juntar medio millon de borregos no es tarea fácil. Las condiciones deben ser óptimas: Poco trabajo, poco dinero (quién va a marchar y protestar pudiendo ir a tomarse unas chelas?), buen clima, abundantes viandas (tortas, tacos, arrocito) y uno que otro fajo de billetes para los pastores de los diversos rebaños. Los hados estuvieron contra los marchantes y con mucha voluntad lograron juntar 70 mil personas. Son muchas, me dirán muchos. No, son apenas un buen porcentaje de los "marchadores profesionales" de esta ciudad. Diversas "organizaciones sociales" (rebaños especializados) ya bien entrenadas y digo, en una ciudad de 20 millones, no es tan dificil tener ese grupo. El motivo? pues protestar contra un supuesto intento de privatización de la industria eléctrica que hace 45 años era de una empresa belga y de otra americana y que ahora dependen del Estado. No existe tal intento, la iniciativa de Fox impulsa un esquema mixto (donde coexistan las empresas estatales y las posibles privadas) y de ahí se agarran los heraldos globalifóbicos para ver moros con tranchetes. Ya lo digo, cualquier pretexto es bueno.
En el noticiero de Canal 40 CNI hubo un interesante reportaje cuando unos "estudiantes" intentaron "tomar" un autobús de pasajeros de servicio público. Algunas señoras que iban en el transporte se negaban a bajar y cuestionaron tanto los métodos como los fines de los "estudiantes". La discusión fue muy ilustrativa sobre cómo las tácticas viejas de lucha social (la movilización, ganar la calle) no sólo no sirven sino que son contraproducentes para levantar apoyo popular.
Sí, Einstein tiene razón, el rebaño es despreciable. La democracia es lo menos peor porque permite a todos intentarlo bajo ciertas reglas (unas escritas, no todas) ya que todos deseamos el poder y quienes dedican su voluntad saben cómo buscarlo. El sistema lo que permite es quitarlos. De los males el menor. Y también era socialdemócrata (hablamos de 1930) y pensaba que era obligación del Estado otorgar garantías mínimas indispensables y proteger, de alguna forma, a los que menos pueden (y desgraciadamente también a los que menos quieren)
El último fragmento es notable para mi gusto: de alguna forma es importante estar pendientes del Estado, pero hay que recordar que la luz está en el individuo y su voluntad creadora. El rebaño se mantiene torpe en su pensamiento y en su sentimiento. Es una sencilla sumatoria. Aritmética básica. Que tengan buen fin de semana.
